What makes a good jean today?
Striking the balance between a piece of art and a tool.
Denim has always lived at the intersection of function and form. In its earliest iterations, every choice was utilitarian with rivets placed to reinforce strain points, weaves selected for endurance, hardware made to last. When all of these components came together, a “good” jean was born. Sturdy. Reliable. Built to work.
But modern needs have shifted. It is very important to still honour the rugged DNA of denim, but we also recognise a new opportunity: to loosen the grip of function and lean into something more expressive. To turn a tool into art.
Loosening Up:
When function stops being the only priority, the familiar elements of a jean become playgrounds, as long as the craftsmanship remains uncompromised.
Take the cuff. Once secured with firm stitching to guarantee longevity, it can now be left raw. Both versions wear beautifully, but without the constraints of tradition, a different kind of honesty emerges. That is one that favours interpretation over instruction.

Consider the leather patch. Once a practical marker distinguishing the real from the counterfeit, it now holds space for expression. Sculpted leather, unexpected tones, textured finishes. These are all far removed from its original purpose, yet completely aligned with the modern wearer. Bold, yes. But beneath the surface lies the same commitment to quality that defined the functional jeans on the left, simply reframed on the right.

And lastly, the printed pocket. Historically a literal certification of pedigree. A ‘stamp of approval’ from the best in the business. Now, pedigree is communicated differently: through art, through narrative, through symbolism. Instead of telling you the garment is worthy, it shows you. A visual echo of how these jeans are meant to live out in the world.

All of this is to say the roots of denim still matter. But roots are only the beginning. What once grew as a forest of hard-wearing workwear has evolved into a jungle of plants equally resilient and far more expressive. Sturdy, yes, but now stunning in its interpretation.
In our view, that’s what makes a truly “good” jean today. One that respects its past, but isn’t bound by it.
